The product starts from an ordinary problem: what do you send when a text isn't enough? There is a song, or a video, or a story that says it better than you could — and nowhere to put it.
The words are already written. A sender picks a card — for a birthday, a thank-you, a hard week — each with original artwork and a two-part sentiment, a hook on the front and a warm twist inside. They can choose the one that fits or type a word and let the composer find one. Nobody faces a blank page.
Behind the lantern, the sender hides the reveal, chosen from a pre-verified library or pasted from a trusted home and verified on the spot. Then a line inside that only the recipient would understand, and a P.S. that waits under the reveal. Those words are the sender's own; Lantern Post never writes them.
The sender previews the card exactly as it will arrive — including the song — and then lights it. Every reveal is verified before it is hidden: resolved to its final destination, matched against a strict allowlist of well-known homes, and screened with Google Cloud Web Risk. Each tap checks the card again.
Then the sender sends the link themselves, however they already talk to that person — by text, by email, through a messaging app, or printed as a scannable QR code. Lantern Post never emails the recipient, and never asks who the card is for.
What arrives is a link and a lantern. No app, no sign-in, nothing to install. The recipient taps, light breaks across the screen in a burst that is never the same twice, and what was hidden is waiting underneath. On song cards a 30-second preview plays on the card itself, before anyone decides whether to continue to a music service.
Nothing about the recipient is kept — no address, no name, no account. Lantern Post sets no tracking pixels and sends no read receipts. It counts only whether a card was opened and whether a lantern was tapped, and it does not read the sender's words. As the product's privacy page puts it: it counts lanterns, not lives.
Anyone holding a card can put it out at any time — the sender, the recipient, or anyone it was forwarded to. The link stops working and the words are erased, for everyone, permanently. Otherwise a card stays lit: Lantern Post sets no expiration timer of its own. Permanent by default, ephemeral the moment anyone decides it should be.
